Trademark examination cycle to be shortened to 1 year

Secretary of Party Group and Director of State Administration for Industry and Commerce Zhou Bohua disclosed that, China has reversed the passive situation of backlog of trademark examination after two years' efforts, which will gradually move toward normalization in 2010 and the examination cycle can be shortened to one year in the end of the year. China's determination, measures and results on resolving the backlog of trademark examination received high praise from international and domestic.

It is understood that, China's trademark applications rank the first in the world for seven consecutive years since 2002. As of June 30 last year, China's total applications for trademark registration have reached 6.77 million pieces, effective registered trademarks reached 2.4 million, ranked the first in the world. Mr. Zhou noted that China's current trademark registrations are numerous, but the "gold content" is not high, export enterprises using their own brand products is still relatively less, and "OEM" enterprises are relatively more, the foreign trademark applications approved by the Madrid International Trademark Registration System are only 8,985 pieces. And, as the end of June last year, China had various kinds of 40.1189 million market players and 17 can own a registered trademark by average. The existence of these problems shows the importance and urgency of strengthening the protection of trademark registration and promoting the implementation of trademark strategies.
