China strengthens crackdown on porn, illegal publications ahead of Asian Games

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has waged a nationwide crackdown on pornography, illegal publications and piracy, in a bid to create a sound environment for the upcoming National Day Holidays, the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games.

"During the campaign, severe strikes should be made against illegal publications in order to ensure social stability and to protect minors and intellectual property rights," said a circular released Tuesday by the National Anti-Pornography and Anti-Illegal Publications Office.

While calling for thorough checks over markets with a special focus on pirated DVDs and CDs, the office urged strict punishment of vendors engaging in wholesaling of illegal publications and pirated products.

In addition, the office called on related departments to offer greater rewards to those who report piracy cases.
The campaign, which began Monday, will last until Nov. 30.
